Hi Reader, My container garden has taught me a lot of things, but the biggest lesson might be this one: I do not need to grow every herb myself to stay connected to it. Some plants thrive right here with me. Green mint, Guinea Hen Weed, and Blue Vervain are growing steadily in my small Kingston backyard. Others, like dandelion, simply did not take root no matter what I tried. It felt like I failed, but now I see it differently. Grow what you can. Source what you cannot. Know what you are consuming. That philosophy shaped my newest blog post, where I share 11 Jamaican herbs you can explore online, some I grow myself, some I source, and all rooted in tradition. It is written especially for anyone in the diaspora who remembers the herbs their mother or grandmother used, but no longer has a Jamaican backyard to walk into and pick them fresh. Inside the post, I cover soursop leaf, Leaf of Life, dandelion, Jamaican thyme, green mint, Guinea Hen Weed, scallion, Blue Vervain, cerasee, rosemary, and oregano, along with what each one has taught me about growing in limited space. Hello Reader, I am sitting down at my desk today with a hot cup of Cuban Oregano tea - bold, aromatic, and deeply comforting. On my crochet hooks this week? Hey Reader, Happy Sunday to you. I hope you are easing into the day with something warm in your hand and a little quiet before the week picks up speed. I am starting this new week with a simple intention. My cousin recently brought home an oregano plant, and I have decided I want to grow my own from it, right here in my backyard container garden. I plan to take a cutting from her plant and see what it takes to root it, grow it, and eventually brew it into tea. I do not have all the answers...
